Rooted in Grace and Peace (Ephesians 1:1–2)

Today we are going to look at Ephesians 1:1–2. I am always amazed at how much truth is packed into the opening verses of Paul’s letters. There is always so much theology right at the beginning!
“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
— Ephesians 1:1–2
Paul identifies himself as an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God. His story is powerful—you can read about his conversion in Acts 9:1–20. Paul went from persecuting Christians to becoming one of the greatest missionaries of the early church.
The book of Ephesians was written to the church in Ephesus, and it is widely believed that Paul wrote it while he was in prison in Rome.
But let’s look closely at something beautiful in this passage.
Paul writes “to the saints.”
That is what believers in Christ are called—saints. Not because we are perfect, but because we belong to Jesus. Everyone who has put their faith in Christ is counted among God’s holy people (see also Romans 1:7). How amazing is that?
Then Paul gives a greeting that is simple but incredibly deep:
“Grace to you and peace.”
These two words contain so much truth.
Grace
Grace is undeserved help and favor from God. It is the gift we receive that we could never earn. God’s grace covers our sin and draws us into a relationship with Him.
Grace is such a big truth wrapped in such a small word.
God’s grace is greater than all our sin.
Peace
Then comes peace.
But this is not the kind of peace the world talks about. This is the peace that surpasses understanding. It comes from being reconciled with God through Christ.
This peace does not depend on circumstances.
It is the deep assurance that comes from knowing God.
I almost wrote, “knowing God is in control,” which is still true. But the deeper truth is simply this:
Knowing God.
That alone brings peace.
How simple.
How beautiful.
When we have fellowship with the Father and the Son, we experience grace first, and then peace.
A Thought for Today
As you go about your day, remember this:
Be rooted in Christ, and watch the joy that flows from that.
Grace from God.
Peace in Christ.
Joy in knowing Him.
